Level II: Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Developmental Injury: Meaning Making, Emotional Processing, and Relational Memory

FEBRUARY 28, 2020 - NOVEMBER 8, 2020

Research reveals the powerful impact that early childhood adversity, attachment disruption, and chronic stress play in our clients' current lives. Early attachment experiences and the environment shape biology, brain development, somatic structures, perception, meaning making, and patterns of relating. This learning sits deep within the brain and body of our clients, in implicit and procedural memory. Difficulty managing relationships, depression, anxiety, somatic complaints, and addiction have roots in these early experiences and the resulting adaptations. The second training in the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Training for Mental Health Professionals, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Developmental Injury: Meaning Making, Emotional Processing, and Relational Memory, equips therapists with the skills, maps, and foundational principles needed to understand and address these challenging issues to engage the wisdom of the body for healing and growth, and utilize effective somatic interventions in a neurobiologically consistent manner.

SP for the Treatment of Developmental Injury illustrates how traumatic, attachment, and developmental issues intersect and how to provide effective treatment given their inevitable intertwining. In this training, research from attachment and neuroscience fields provides the theoretical foundation for Sensorimotor Psychotherapy interventions and practices that address the effects of suboptimal and/or traumatic early attachment. Students are introduced to the essential skills for working with clients' states of consciousness, implicit and procedural memory, and strong primary affect change. Students learn to recognize, understand and apply interventions to the somatic and relational maladaptive patterns and core injuries that their clients' present. Specific techniques are taught to evoke early childhood core memory that contribute to emotional hijacking and chronic relational dysregulation.
